What do Simpler Recycling rules mean for your business?
Following Simpler Recyling rules are a legal requirement
By March 31 2025, all businesses with over 10 full-time equivalent employees must recycle these materials:
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
- Glass
- Metal tins, cans, aerosols, lids, clean food trays and clean foil
- Food waste
By March 2027, businesses with less than 10 full-time equivalent employees must do the same.
Your business can be fined or prosecuted if you do not follow the Simpler Recycling rules.
What are the best ways for businesses to follow the Simpler Recycling rules?
Separate recycling from your rubbish
Your business will be responsible for separating your general waste of:
- food waste
- all dry recycling (paper, card, plastic packaging, glass and metal)
This means you will need at least three waste containers.
Focus on your food waste collections
All businesses will have to separate food waste for collection, no matter how small the quantity.
Depending on the volumes you produce, your business recycling rate and sustainability performance could jump up simply by separating your food waste.
